Can meditation help reduce stress and build healthier habits?
Yes. Meditation is a simple practice that can help calm the mind, reduce stress and improve focus. When practised consistently, it may also support the development of healthier thinking habits and emotional wellbeing.
Many people believe they are "too busy" or "can't switch off" to meditate. I used to think exactly the same.
Then I discovered that meditation does not require hours of sitting in silence. Even 10 to 20 minutes a day can become a valuable part of your routine.
As part of the Brain Coaching process, meditation can help reinforce the positive thinking habits and practical strategies developed during coaching sessions.
What is the Brain Coaching meditation method?
The Brain Coaching approach combines guided relaxation with positive affirmations and calming music.
Some clients also choose to listen to music containing binaural beats, although this is optional and not necessary for everyone.
The aim is to create a calm mental state where you can focus on reinforcing the healthier thoughts and behaviours you want to develop.
How to practise Brain Coaching meditation
1. Choose a quiet place
Find somewhere warm, comfortable and free from distractions.
If you are new to meditation, headphones can help you stay focused.
2. Listen to calming music
If you have received Brain Coaching meditation audio, upload it to your phone or preferred device.
Use headphones or earbuds if you find them more relaxing.
3. Choose a positive affirmation
Select a short phrase that reflects how you would like to think or feel.
Examples include:
I am calm.
I am capable.
I am confident.
I am worthy.
I can handle challenges.
Focus on positive statements rather than phrases containing words such as "don't", "never" or "not".
4. Focus on your breathing
Take a slow breath in through your nose for a count of four.
Breathe out gently through your mouth for a count of four.
Repeat this steady breathing throughout your meditation.
5. Relax your body
Allow your shoulders to soften and drop away from your ears.
Relax your jaw, hands and neck.
Notice any areas of tension and gently release them.
6. Bring your attention back when your mind wanders
It is completely normal for your thoughts to drift.
Meditation is not about having a perfectly quiet mind.
Each time you notice your attention wandering, gently return your focus to your breathing, your affirmation or the music.
That is part of the practice.
7. Keep practising
Like any new skill, meditation becomes easier with regular practice.
Over time, many people notice they feel calmer, more focused and better able to manage stressful situations.
Repeating positive habits consistently also helps reinforce new ways of thinking.
Why does meditation help?
Research suggests meditation may:
Reduce feelings of stress and anxiety
Improve emotional regulation
Increase focus and concentration
Support better sleep
Encourage greater self-awareness
Promote relaxation
While meditation is not a cure for mental health conditions, many people find it a valuable addition to their overall wellbeing routine.
How often should you meditate?
There is no perfect amount.
Many people begin with 10 minutes a day and gradually increase to 20 minutes if it suits their lifestyle.
Consistency is usually more important than the length of each session.
